changes to the CCPDT policy

The Alberta Force Free Alliance is deeply concerned by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT)'s 2025 Prohibited Practices Policy, which permits the use of aversive tools such as prong and electronic collars. While the policy outlines specific restrictions—such as prohibiting prong collars for dogs under six months and electronic collars for dogs under one year, and disallowing their use for foundational training or addressing behavioural issues like aggression and anxiety—it still allows these tools' application in other scenarios.

By allowing and regulating the use of these tools rather than prohibiting them outright, the CCPDT has compromised its role as a body that should be upholding the highest standards in humane training. This decision fails to reflect a commitment to evidence-based, ethical practice.

As a result, the Alberta Force Free Alliance will no longer accept CCPDT certification for new members. This decision does not affect existing members. However, we encourage current members with CCPDT credentials to explore other certifying bodies that are fully aligned with force-free, science-based values.

A list of recommended organizations is available under our JOIN tab. We recognize the significant time, effort, and dedication it takes to earn CCPDT certification. This decision is not a reflection of individual trainers—many of whom are committed to force-free methods and share our concerns about these policy changes. Rather, it is a necessary response to a shift in standards that no longer align with AFFA’s core values and ethical principles.
